Pure magic. Only a few weeks ago, it was purple, purpler, purplest here: the flowering heathland. And yet today... Today, what nature intended to be red... is red. The trees are preparing for yet another winter. Oak leaves, beech leaves, all manner of leaves are a determined shade of red. Not long now and they will whirl through the air in front of you, like in a children’s book. Mushrooms are sprouting here and there. Very useful, as their fungal filaments tidy up all these leaves. Be careful where you walk, the mushrooms are doing important work. And be careful not to step in puddles. Or step in puddles on purpose! Squirrels and jays gather and hide acorns and beechnuts in readiness. You never know how long this winter might last. It’s not quite here yet. There may be a few rays of autumn sun today. Or the first night frost may create a beautiful tableau. Or you may spot deer and boars, no longer able to hide behind foliage. Enjoy... this may be the most beautiful season of all!
