Mountains of experience

An area with un-Dutch vistas over large rolling heathland and vast forests. The Sallandse Heuvelrug between Hellendoorn and Holten. In the distant past shifting ice, melting water and drifting sand formed the landscape. Humans have also left their traces there, the oldest of which date from five thousand years ago.

Breathtaking
National Park Sallandse Heuvelrug

National parks have been established all over the world to protect large natural areas. Twenty areas are currently designated as national parks in the Netherlands. They form the calling cards of Dutch nature. Nature management is paramount, but national parks also focus on nature-oriented recreation, communication and education and research. Part of the Sallandse Heuvelrug south of the N35 is a national park. It has been given this status because it is a valuable area and therefore deserves extra protection.

Work together
Our partners

The organization of the De Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park has changed since 1 January 2015. The province of Overijssel has transferred the responsibility for the national parks to the municipalities. A core team has now been formed and both municipalities are working to articulate their ambition with regard to the National Park. In the coming years, the province of Overijssel, Natuurmonumenten and Staatsbosbeheer will work on the recovery and expansion of the heath in National Park De Sallandse Heuvelrug. A pallet of measures will ensure that the wealth of plant and animal species on dry heath is preserved and strengthened.
